Strategic Growth Starts with a Clear Purpose

We believe that every successful charter school project begins long before a single shovel is in the ground. It starts with clarity of purpose; understanding Why the project is needed and How it will support the school’s mission.

That’s the focus of a new article by our Vice President, Derek Carpenter, titled “Creating the ‘What’ Behind the ‘Why’: A Practical Guide to Charter School Facility Projects.” Drawing on years of experience working alongside charter schools, serving as a board member at Union Academy, and a parent of two charter school graduates, Derek outlines a clear and practical framework for approaching facility planning with intention and confidence.

He explains that too often, schools begin with the What — the building, the space, the expansion — without first defining the deeper Why behind it. Whether it’s adding a new grade, creating collaborative learning environments, or replacing an aging facility, the most effective projects stay grounded in a shared purpose that reflects the school’s unique identity.

From there, the article walks through how schools can:

  • Translate the Why into the What – Define a clear need and engage the right design partners early.
  • Develop the HowBuild a team that understands the nuances of charter school construction and uses preconstruction to align scope, cost, and schedule.
  • Communicate Clearly – Keep stakeholders, board members, and community partners informed and engaged throughout the process.

As Derek notes, “By the end of this process, your ‘Why’ will have a clear vision, your ‘What’ will have a solid solution, and your ‘How’ will have a real plan and budget.”

At Myers & Chapman, we’re proud to see our team leading these conversations — helping educational communities grow strategically, stay mission-focused, and build with purpose.
